Obama, Gay Marriage, and so on!
So I was taking a look at this page because I wanted to get a BASIC idea of how Obama felt about gay marriages. I have been basing my choice of voting on this for the past 3 presidential elections. Gay rights have always been at the top of my activism list, second is line is sex worker rights. So I like some of Obama’s ideas and you know I was thinking about this while “marriage” vs. “civil union” and so on.
Marriage is a word that comes from the Chrisitan religion and frankly I don’t think I want a word with all that energy tied around it. In fact I think that marriage is NOT a good word to use in any Legal way. Infact I think that all couples, gay, str8, trans, should us the word “civil union” because legally that is what it is!!
I think the the words Marriage, commitment ceremony, and such should be saved for your church. AND in fact I think all couples, regardless of their orientation, should have to file seperately for the legal standpoint. THEN when stupid people get spiritually married they should have to wait 3 months before its legal or something… then we won’t have anulment. It wouldn’t exist.
So I think it should work like this, regardless of someone’s orientation. Couple goes to spiritual place to get “married” or makes a “commitment”. They get some sort of document with a date. 3 months from that date they go into a legal office and file as a “Legal Couple” and that’s it. Ideally you should have to renew this every 7 years or something, but that’s another rant! I don’t believe ANYTHING is forever! I also think that for those that aren’t spiritual can simply put in an application, wait 3 months, and then become married.
When you get a divorce its not even considered until you been seperated for a year!! Why should a marriage be taken legally when you can do that in less then 24 hours but it takes a whole year to divorce. The sanctity of marriage is a crock and I think we need to just wipe the slate clean and start anew!
I should run for president

Hi there, I was also curious to see what else Obama has to say about gay marriage and LGBT rights, so I compiled a list of quotes, click my name/link above to visit.
I hear what you’re saying about not wanting to use the word “marriage” to describe the civil ceremony, but that seems odd to me because even non-religious people call each other husband/wife and think of themselves as married. The church doesn’t own “marriage”, any more than it owns “funerals” or other ceremonies or institutions. You can have a civil or religious marriage, a civil or religious funeral, a civil or religious school, hospital, etc. Even you said “for those that aren’t spiritual” can put in an application “and then become married” because that is how we use the term married, it doesn’t necessarily have religious connotations.
sorry wrong link on prev comment, it should be:

Most Fundamentalists are completely unaware of the historical context of the bible. They are just told what to believe, mostly by people who prey on them and have no theological training. Every theologian agrees on the importance of reading and understanding the Bible in its historical and cultural context. When considered in this way, the life of Jesus and everyone in the old testament is unimaginable in modern times, though the teaching of Jesus are beneficial when understood in our time in history. I am a convinced Christian and I don’t agree (call me conservative) with all of the fundamentalists that promote murder, polygamy, torture, incest, and idol worship. If you want to be a Fundamentalist and disregard the historicity of the Bible, then you agree with all that is in it and thus know that many sanctioned people of God in the Old Testament had several wives, had sex with their children, and killed their relatives (the poor kids that did not obey their parents). Oh wait, they probably don’t agree with that. It is convenient to use the historical argument for that, but not for the issue of homosexuality. Please worship God and follow Jesus out of love and devotion, rather than what is convenient for you.
